iXope – digital revolution of medical devices for GPs

Australian invention from a doctor for doctors. A first of its kind, all-in-one digital medical device for general practitioners to examine and perform minor procedures on the ears, eyes and skin.

The traditional otoscope, ophthalmoscope and dermatoscope don‘t meet the needs of today’s general practitioners. They don’t support procedures requiring visualisation, they don’t support electronic image capture for documentation in the patient record, and they leave the GP with a desk cluttered with a multitude of separate instruments. This let to the innovative medical device for GPs, the iXope.

The iXope is a procedural otoscope which allows to remove wax or foreign bodies under vision from the patient’s ear - just like an ear microscope, but smaller and more affordable. Current practice is ear syringing, which induces risk to the patient. This is reflected in the number of medico-legal disputes associated with the procedure. Alternatively, GPs have to refer their patients to an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist.

The iXope combines the functions of multiple medical devices general practitioners are using today into one digital medical device which additionally supports billable procedures and easy digital documentation. The unique capability to perform examinations at arm’s length will be more comfortable for doctors and patients, particularly as the recent Covid-19 pandemic has made us all more sensitive to these issues. The iScope can also save patients’ time and money by avoiding specialist consultations.

JD Sanmed was founded by Dr Olaf Rusoke-Dierich who developed the iScope product as a solution to problems he and his colleagues in General Practice experienced first hand, every day. Having been selected into the Medical Device Partnering Program (MDPP), currently a proof of concept prototype as part of their program of partnership between industry and academia is built.

It had been an amazing experience for Dr Olaf Rusoke-Dierich being a doctor and becoming a founder of a MedTech startup. He and his experienced commercialization team are working together to realise that the iScope will be available to Australian doctors and be worlds first day-to-day digital medical device for GPs.
